8th International Glaucoma Surgery Congress Begins
The 8th International Glaucoma Surgery Congress started today ( Thursday) at Al Bustan Palace hotel under the auspices of H.E. Dr. Darwish Saif Al Muharbi, MOH’s Undersecretary of Financial and Administrative Affairs.
The opening ceremony included a welcome speech from the president of the Oman Ophthalmic Society Dr. Rashid Al Saidi where he applauded the Sultanate’s accomplishments in tackling the different types of eye diseases. He emphasized that the agenda of the Congress was developed so that it achieve certain goals mainly; developing the diagnostic methods and the surgical and medical treatment means, producing treatment means that commensurate with our environment, developing the medical training for the ophthalmologists and their assistants, and promoting the health awareness among community.
Moreover, Dr. Tariq Shaarawy, the President of the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery (ISGS), highlighted in his speech the role of the ISGS in training and educating surgeons on handling this disease and exposing them to the latest advanced surgical device for Glaucoma management.
At the end of the ceremony, H.E. Dr. Muharbi, MOH’s Undersecretary of Financial and Administrative Affairs opened the accompanying exhibition of specialized international companies. The exhibition display the latest pharmaceutical products and electromedical devices used in treating the Glaucoma, along with scientific publications.
The three-day conference, which is organized by the Oman Ophthalmic Society and the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery, will witness local, regional, and international participation of more than 450 health workers from 50 countries; including the Sultanate, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Canada, the United States of America (USA), and different parts of the world. It targets doctors, nurses, Opticians, ophthalmology Researchers, and others who work in Ophthalmology.
The conference will consist of several sessions of scientific papers focusing on Glaucoma presented by a number of specialized international speakers.
The first day sessions of the conference highlighted the role of surgery in Glaucoma Treatment, the management of Leaking blebs, and the non-penetrating surgeries.
The Congress aims at briefing the participants with the ophthalmology updates, exchanging knowledge and experiences with the regional and international participants, and identifying the new surgical techniques used in Glaucoma diagnosis and management.
