Health Minister Meets UN Interagency Task Force on NCDs

H.E. Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Saidi, Minister of Health, received in his office today (Sunday) the United Nations Interagency Task Force (UNIATF) on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs), currently visiting the Sultanate.

The UN Task Force comprises of 24 members chaired by H.E. Dr. Oleg Chestnov, WHO's Assistant Director General for NCDs and Mental Health, and 13 experts from the UN Agencies. This visit aims at following up the implementation of Political Declaration on NCDs issued on September 2011, where the States’ members made commitments (including the Sultanate) to tackle the risk of NCDs through multi-sectoral cooperation. It provides technical support to the Sultanate’s government to meet high- national multi-sectoral level response to NCD, in line with the WHO Global NCD Action Plan 2013–2020.

During the meeting, the UNIATF briefs the minister on the mission’s objectives and intended outcomes. Afterwards, His Excellency discussed with them the situation of NCDs, and the risk factors in the country and globally.

Afterwards, an extended meeting was held at the MOH Conference hall chaired by the Health Minister where the Task Force discussed approaches of enhancing the national multi-sectoral actions to prevent and control NCDs.

Furthermore, within the three-day visit, the UNIATF will meet number of Omani officials to discuss the fact of NCDs in Oman and globe, and the international efforts exerted to control them. They will additionally review the plans of health sector and other authorities, the progress of NCDs prevention and control plans, and identify possible areas of joint work.

Based on the high-level UN meeting recommendations held in 2011, the task force would focus on four NCDs specifically  cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. Moreover, emphasis will be put on the main risk factors related to these diseases, which are tobacco, physical inactivity, and unhealthy diet.

It is worth noted that the MOH, committing to UN Political Declaration, has established a high-multi-sectoral national committee presided by H.E. Dr. MOH’s Undersecretary of Planning Affairs. The committee issued a national policy on NCDs and gained approval by the Cabinet early this year.
