The Ministry of Health (MOH) hosted today Monday the 18th Inter-Country Meeting of Directors of Poliovirus Laboratories in the Eastern Mediterranean Region at the Holiday Inn Hotel under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Sultan bin Yarub al-Busaidi, MOH Advisor for Health Affairs.
The three-day meeting aimed to provide the laboratories officials with the latest issues related to poliovirus, as well as familiarize the participants with the new methods and developments in the field of diagnosis the infection of the poliovirus.
It discussed various health issues in the first day for instance; the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), laboratory performance in several countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Somalia, Djibouti, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, as well as Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus (VDPV).
“In 2015, the outbreaks that took place in 2013–2014 in the Horn of Africa and in some Middle East were declared over following outbreak response assessment missions in the affected countries and field review of the surveillance and response activities. No polio cases have been reported as a result of the Middle East outbreak for almost 2 years now” Dr. Homin Asghar, Regional Advisor in the Public Health Laboratories, EMRO.
