The Muscat International Ophthalmology Conference (MIOC), organized by the Armed Force Hospital in cooperation with the Oman Ophthalmic Society (OOS) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) began today (Thursday) at the Oman Conventions & Exhibition Center under the patronage of H.H. Sayyid Taimor bin Asad bin Tariq AL-Said.
H.E. Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-saidi, Minister of Health stressed that such conferences are enriching the medical knowledge and skills that will develop the health services in the Sultanate. He added that ophthalmology is constantly developing, in which the Muscat International Ophthalmology Conference, in the presence of a number of competencies, touches upon the latest development in ophthalmology.
The opening ceremony included a speech of Dr. Rashid Al-Saidi, Head of the MIOC Organizing Committee, in which he pointed out that number of international academy and societies are participating in the Conference this year including the American Academy of Ophthalmology along with the Syrian, Iraqi, Iranian, Libyan and Yemeni societies. He also added that the Conference will include training labs to carry out rare eye operations by using animals eyes and the same modern equipment in order to get used to using the same tools and devices.
Dr. Rashid Al-Saidi also said "Through researches in the field of medicine, a number of Omani doctors were found that was mastered in medicine for hundreds of years, not only that but also proved their manner of treatment by experience and scientific evidence and preceded their era in this. Many of these sciences are still compatible with the experimental modern science, which indicate the trials and anatomy they have carried out to reach to this evidences and information. Therefore, today, we special mention the Omani doctor Rashid bin Omirah, who lived in the 10th Hijri, 16th AD century". He indicated that Bin Omirah, the Omani doctor, mentioned in his manuscript, which written by his own handwriting, many of what is currently being taught in the international universities and accurately compatible with the modern science".
The opening ceremony included a 3D video presentation of the life of the Omani Doctor, Rashid Bin Omirah and his scientific contributions. It also included a hologram video presentation about the science of medicine and the ophthalmology in Oman from the middle times to the blessed renaissance.
After that, H.H. Sayyid Taimor bin Asad bin Tariq AL-Said launched the Dr. Bin Omirah Award, which is the first of its kind in the field of medicine at the national level. The Award was granted unanimously for a number of Omani and international doctors namely Dr. Ali Mohammed Moosa, Dr. Ghazi Omar Al-Zubaidi, Dr. Abdullah Mohammed Al-Riyami for their contributions in the medical field in the Sultanate along with Prof. Anselm Kampik and Dr. Siefried Priglinger.
Furthermore, the Chief Guest also inaugurated the exhibition of the medical products and modern technologies used in treating various eyes diseases.
The International Conference gathers more than (600) participants including physicians, nurses, opticians and ophthalmology researchers from the Sultanate, GCC countries and other world countries.
The Conference aims at familiarizing the participants on the latest developments of the ophthalmology, exchanging experiences with the regional and international participants, as well as identifying the new surgical techniques used in diagnosing and treating the eye diseases.
The three-day Conference includes many scientific sessions and workshops that address the diabetic retinopathy, dry eyes, presbyopia, congenital eye diseases, glaucoma, cataract, keratoconus, role of the Omani doctors in the middle times in eye medicine and others.
In addition, the Conference of this year includes medical simulation labs for several surgeries, as well as conducting awareness sessions for the general public on Thursday and Friday from 4 pm. to 7 pm.
