The Ministry of Health would like to clarify on the newspaper report issued yesterday August 4, regarding the number of Sultanate’s neonatal deaths in five months. The published report said that, based on statistics released by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI), 3,100 children died after birth in the Sultanate’s hospitals during the period from January to the end of May this year that includes 2500 Omani newborns.

However, the number (3100) represents the deaths among both children and adults registered during the January-May period according to NCSI report. Remarkably, the infant (under one year of age) mortality rate among Omani children is 8.5 per 1,000 live births, according to the NCSI statistics 2018.

Hence, the Ministry calls upon all media specialists and journalists to read the health indicators properly and refer to the relevant specialists prior to publishing the news.
