New Major Accomplishment in Hand Surgery
15/3/2015The “Hand Surgery Team” at Khoula Hospital has successfully performed two distinguished accomplishments in the field of re-attaching amputated body parts. The operation of re-attaching 4 amputated fingers of an Asian patient and of one finger of 3-year-old girl were performed with the outmost work and extreme care. In spite of its rarity and complexity, the operations were a great success.
Re-attachment of amputated body parts with microvascular surgery is routinely done in Khoula hospital. The surgery involves transfer of tissues from one part of the body to another with establishment of blood supply, this surgery is done under microscope and requires great skill and patience, says Dr. Jopal Malhotra, senior consultant surgeon who performed the two operations. One such operation takes at least 8-10 hours and even longer.
And for a further improvement in providing the best health care in Oman, Ministry of Health has recently established a separate department of Hand surgery in Khoula Hospital. The new department of Hand & Microvascular surgery has already started providing dedicated and focused service. Development of superspecialty department is one of its kind in the region and it adds a lot to the care of patients with hand abnormalities and unfortunate victims of hand injuries.
