Within the celebration the World Blood Donor Day, which comes this year under the theme ‘Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life’, the Ministry of Health (MOH) represented by the Department of Blood Banks Services held an event today (Sunday) to honor the blood donors from individuals and contributing authorities who made donation campaigns successful.

The celebration ceremony was held under the auspices of H.E. Sheikh Khalid bin Omar Al Marhoon, Minister of Civil Service at Muscat Intercontinental hotel, with the presence of number of MOH senior officials.

The ceremony included a speech of Dr. Zainab Salim Al Oraimi, Director of the Blood Banks Services that highlighted the importance of the event in appreciating the efforts and cooperation of ministries, public, private, as well as non-governmental organizations in addition to applauding their leading role in the success of blood donation drives. The BBS Director pointed out that the theme of this year underlines the noble humanitarian values seen in favoring others on oneself as well as emphasizing the significance of voluntary non-remunerated donation and the need for the voluntary donation throughout the year in order to maintain the provision of adequate supplies of blood for the patients.    

Dr. Al Oraimi added that blood banks services in the Sultanate have received considerable attention from the MOH highlighting that the in its effort to upgrade the safety of blood, a DNA Screening technology for blood donor has been recently introduced in addition to linking the blood banks electronically to set up a national data base for blood donors.   

The honoring ceremony included presentation on the World Blood Donor Day, and the services of blood banks department as well as the role of the donors.

At the end of the ceremony, the patron of the event honored (201) blood donors including donors with rare blood groups and donors of platelet. The honoring further included  (69) government, private, and non-governmental organizations , authorizes, and individuals engaged in blood donations campaigns, in addition to the good coordinators of blood donation campaigns and the sub-blood banks in the Sultanate’s different Governorates.  

It is noted that every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to thank voluntary blood donors and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations.
