The Ministry of Health assures the public that there is no reason for increased concern over MERS coronavirus infections in the Sultanate. Since its discovery, a total of six cases have been discovered in Oman so far, the first one in October 2013. The Omani patient recently reported from Thailand, is currently in stable condition and receiving medical care in one of the hospitals in Thailand. Locally, the public health response teams are following the household contacts as well as the airline staff and passengers whom might have been exposed to the case. The Ministry is in communication with the concerned heath authorities in Thailand and their focal point, in compliance with the International Health Regulations. The Ministry calls on all the public to adhere to appropriate infection prevention and control measures such as personal hygienic practices including covering mouth and nose while coughing and sneezing and also to practice hand hygiene at all times to reduce the general risk of respiratory infections.
